In this bonus episode, you’ll hear Judy and I discuss two topics.
First, I ask Judy what Andy and Jamie would have made of mini-tennis if they were 7 and 8 years old nowadays
Secondly, I ask her opinions on Sir Alex Fergusons method of identifying some of his players through the parents, mainly the mothers.
20 interesting minutes of discussion on two important topics

Great podcast, Chris. Agree with Judy’s comment about letting kids work things out for themselves on the court. Sometimes see parents coaching their 8-year-old from the sidelines, which actually stresses out the child with resultant tantrums. Also agree that they need to do other sports, especially a team sport. It gives them variety and relieves the stress that tennis brings. Sometimes kids do play too much tennis and there is pressure from parents/coaches to play 3/4 times a week and it’s not always fun for them. Problem there is that coaching sessions are booked in, sometimes, 10-week blocks at £10-£15 session. When you’re paying up front, you want your child to attend otherwise it’s a waste of money even when you know they need a break. I think it’s important to be guided by your child, though, and just let tennis be as fun and pressure-free as possible at that age.

Thanks for your comment Mark. I agree, we have to be careful not to over commit our children to endless coaching sessions before they have fallen in love with the game.
