It has been a slightly surreal 24 hours since Andy gave his emotional press conference in Australia. There has been an outpouring of emotion from his many fans around the world and huge support from his peers and legends of the game. This speaks volumes, not just for the player, but for the person he is.
Yesterday, someone asked me what my favourite Andy memory was. My response shocked them but it was the first thing that jumped into my mind.
In 2007, aged 19, Andy was playing the Frenchman, Paul-Henri Mathieu in the 4th round. I had the house to myself and sat down for the match. It was a crappy match to be honest but, as always with Andy, absolutely captivating.
Andy was 2-6 3-5 15-40 and someone from the crowd stood up and shouted ‘Murray, you’ve got nothing’. I couldn’t hear what he’d said but knew the tone was derogatory. I could also see Andy’s reaction towards the gent. The fire was lit and every point won for the immediate future was followed by a glare.
When I tell my grand children about Andy Murray, I will be telling them about this young kid from Scotland who simply refused to be beaten. I will tell them about times like his French Open match where he rolled his ankle against Berrer and still found a way to win. About how many times he was 2 sets down and came back to win in 5.
The history books are already written. There is no doubt that Andy Murray is amongst the very finest tennis players to ever grace the game.
Every time Andy played a match, it was an event. Let us make sure we keep telling the stories of his amazing accomplishments and his character because, in reality, we will never see his likes again.
All I can say is, thank you Andy
